Weekend in Rotorua (J+57)

Last weekend we drove the car to Rotorua. It’s a touristic town located at 100 km in the east of Hamilton situated on a volcano, which explains the geothermal activities in the surroundings of Rotorua.

Te Puia

We first visited Te Puia Geothermical Park where we saw geysers; steam comes out from the ground, strange boiling mud and we constantly smelt the sulphur odour. We also saw two kiwis (better than in Otoharanga). Later, we assisted a Maori culture performance. Some Maoris in traditional wear showed us the welcome ceremony.

Then we went in town and discovered other geothermic activities in the middle of the city and we also saw blacks’ swans and a museum, a marvelous building. At night we had a dinner in Pig and Whistle, a typical pub where we ate good NZ’s sandwich, drank beers and watch the semi-final of the Air Zew Zealand Cup (rugby). We finished the night in a club at 3 o’clock.

The following day we did mountain biking. The trails are good and diverse; we started with an easy one and finish with a difficult one and got lost in a forest with vertical descent!! So sweet but so tired we decided to do a short walk to a little falls. It was the former site of an old hydro powered dam.

Quelques représentations des dieux Maoriens

On était à Rotorua pour la première fois. C'est vraiment une petite ville charmante mais qui sent mauvais quand t'es près d'un geyser. On a visité le parc géothermal Te Puia pour commencer. Puis été compris dans le billet un spectacle de la culture Maorie : on était accueilli par le rituel que l'on appelle "hongi", avant de s'installer dans une salle commune traditionnelle "Maere".

Après avoir terminé la visite du parc terminé, on a fait un tour dans la ville même. Ce n'est pas une très grande ville mais le lac qui se trouvait probablement dans Kuirau Park, bouillant (au moins très chaud) et acide nous a impressionnés. Ce n'est pas le lac Rotorua, car il est vachement plus grand et je ne préfère pas l’imaginer s’il était bouillant!!!

Le soir, dégustation de burgers typiquement néo-zélandais. On n'arrête pas d'essayer les burgers depuis notre arrivée, mais je dois avouer que plus tu manges les vrais et moins t'aimes McDo, ;) Ensuite c'était party time!
